Chiming in here to add that I think their straightforwardness is what makes them creepy, at least in part. Like with Rashad, he has this comparatively simplistic approach to morality and is pretty unshakable in his own convictions, and that WOULD make writing him fairly straightforward in a lot of ways. But that rigidity is so different from most other characters that it makes him off-putting. Idk, it's hard to get my thoughts straight in phone tags; it just seems to me that said straightforwardness is a reflection of them and not you.
