I'm now imagining him doing that... and then it getting stuck to something (probably something really inconvenient) because it can stab through practically anything, and Richard is the only one who can pull it free.

Like just imagine Spike practising with it or something in the bookshop and he ends up accidentally throwing it and it gets stuck in the wall and no one can remove it, so Richard has to come get it back.
